INTRODUCTION
PIROX 20MG contains Piroxicam which is one of the group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It will help to relieve the pain and reduce swelling that affecting the joints and muscles. It is used to relieve some symptoms caused by osteoarthritis (joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis (rheumatism of the spine) such as swelling, stiffness and joint pain.
Always take this medicine as directed by physician. Your doctor will decide the dose and duration of therapy depending upon your age, weight and condition. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. It is not recommended for the use in children and adolescents under 18 years. Do not take this medicine, if you have or have had disorders of stomach or intestines such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, gastrointestinal cancers or diverticulitis (inflamed or infected pouches in the colon). It should be used with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine. Tell your doctor, if you are taking or taken or might take any other medicines. The most common side effects include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, anorexia, vertigo, etc.
USES OF PIROX 20MG
- Relieve the symptoms caused by osteoarthritis (joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis (rheumatism of the spine) such as swelling, stiffness and joint pain
HOW PIROX 20MG WORKS
It works by preventing the production of endogenous prostaglandins which are involved in mediation of pain, stiffness, tenderness and swelling.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Always take PIROX 20MG exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the medicine whole with plenty of water. If you take more PIROX 20MG than you should, talk to your doctor.
SIDE EFFECTS OF PIROX 20MG
SERIOUS
- Any sign of bleeding in the stomach or intestines, such as passing black or bloodstained bowel movements or vomiting blood
- Sudden wheeziness, difficulty in breathing, fever, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, rash or itching (especially affecting the whole body)
- A rash, blistering or peeling of the skin, mouth, eyes or genitals
- Yellowing of the skin and whites of your eyes (jaundice) which may be a sign of hepatitis or other liver problems
COMMON
- Dizziness
- Nausea, vomiting
- Diarrhea, indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Pain in abdomen
- Changes in the red blood cells which may result in unusual bruising or bleeding
- Changes in the white blood cells which may result in increased risk of infection
- Anorexia
- Increase in blood sugar levels
- Headache
- Vertigo (a spinning sensation)
- Drowsiness
- Ringing in ears (tinnitus)
- Constipation
- Wind
- Itching, skin rash
- Swelling of the feet, hands or other parts of the body (oedema)
- Weight increase
RARE
- Kidney failure or problems

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Skin itching:
Avoid bath in hot water because hot water can irritate the skin. Moisturizers can be used regular basis to soothe and hydrate the affected area.
Nausea and vomiting:
Keep try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.
Diarrhea:
Drink lot of fluid, such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicine without consulting your doctor.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
PIROX 20MG should be used with caution in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.
BREASTFEEDING
PIROX 20MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machinery while taking this medicine, it may make you feel dizzy, drowsy, vision problems and tired.
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with PIROX 20MG.
KIDNEY
PIROX 20MG should be taken with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
PIROX 20MG should be taken with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not take if you are allergic to this medicine.
HEART DISEASE
If you have any heart related problems, consult your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.
OTHERS
Do not take PIROX 20MG if you,
- Have or had or currently have a stomach or intestinal ulcer, bleeding or perforation
- Have or have had disorders of stomach or intestines such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, gastrointestinal cancers or diverticulitis (inflamed or infected pouches in the colon)
- Suffer from high cholesterol or hardening of the arteries
- Suffer from asthma
INTERACTIONS
Talk to your doctor if you are taking:
- Aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain relief
- Anticoagulants such as warfarin to prevent blood clots
- Corticosteroids
- Low dose aspirin (75 mg) to help prevent heart attack or stroke
- Medicines used to treat heart conditions known as cardiac glycosides, such as digoxin
- Medicines for depression such as lithium or selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
- Antihypertensives to treat high blood pressure
- Methotrexate
- Ciclosporin or tacrolimus, which are given to help prevent rejection of transplanted organs
- Quinolone antibiotics e.g. ciprofloxacin, which are used to treat various infections
- Mifepristone, a medicine used to terminate pregnancy
- Diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide to treat high blood pressure or kidney problems
