INTRODUCTION
NICOTEX contains Nicotine which belongs to the group of medicines called Smoking Cessation Aids. It is used to quit smoking. It prevents and relieves the withdrawal symptoms that occurs in people who wish to quit smoking. It also reduces the cravings for smoking when you try to reduce the number of cigarettes that you smoke in a day.
Smoking is a harmful practice in which abusive substances (tobacco) are burned and ingested in the form of smoke. Tobacco contains a chemical called nicotine which makes you to smoke more. Within seconds of taking a puff, nicotine from the tobacco reaches your brain and increases the release of certain brain chemicals that regulates your mood and behavior. Over a period, this causes addiction, and your body tends to show cravings for smoking or precipitate withdrawal symptoms if you try to quit smoking.
NICOTEX is a nicotine replacement therapy. It helps to quit smoking by replacing the deficient levels of nicotine in your body that happens when you attempt to quit smoking. As a result, it reduces the cravings for smoking and protects your body from the harmful effects of abusive substances (such as tobacco).
Chew NICOTEX slowly in your mouth. Do not swallow the medicine. Your doctor will decide the number of doses to be taken per day depending upon the number of cigarettes that you smoke in a day.
Before taking NICOTEX, inform your doctor if you have any heart, liver, or kidney diseases. You must also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, stomach problems, thyroid problems or fits before taking NICOTEX as a precaution.
Do not take NICOTEX if you are allergic to nicotine or if you are a child aged below 12 years. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding must try to quit smoking without using a nicotine replacement therapy. However, if it is not possible, NICOTEX can be used in such women to quit smoking after consulting their doctor.
The most common side effects of taking NICOTEX are ulceration of mouth, tongue or throat, hiccups, nausea, increased salivation, and stomach pain. Consult your doctor if any of these side effect worsens.

HOW NICOTEX WORKS
NICOTEX is a nicotine replacement therapy. It contains nicotine which replaces the nicotine derived from tobacco products. DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Use NICOTEX as directed by your physician. Chew NICOTEX slowly until the taste becomes strong. Rest the medicine between your gum and cheeks for some time. Chew the medicine once gain.
Repeat the same for at least for 30 minutes or until the taste of the medicine fades. Do not chew the medicine continuously, as it may release nicotine very quickly. This can also irritate your throat, or may cause stomach upset or hiccups.
Your doctor will decide the number of doses of NICOTEX to be taken per day depending upon the number of cigarettes that you smoke in a day.
SIDE EFFECTS OF NICOTEX
COMMON
- Headache, dizziness

- Tingling and numbness of hands and feet

UNCOMMON
- Abnormal dream (nightmares)
- Reddish discoloration of the face and/or neck
- Difficulty in breathing
- Voice damage
- Nose block, sneezing
- Throat tightness or congestion
- Burping
- Swollen, red, sore tongue
RARE
- Difficulty in swallowing
Stop taking NICOTEX and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Allergic reactions (such as swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, and tongue, itching of the skin, swelling of the skin, ulceration, and inflammation of the lining of the mouth, difficulty breathing and dizziness)
- Fast or increased heartbeat, chest palpitations, shortness of breath
- Seizures (fits) or abnormal body movements
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea and Vomiting:
Take NICOTEX with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.
Sore mouth:
Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid eating spicy foods. Apply a pain-relieving gel on your mouth after consulting your doctor. Consult your doctor if this symptom worsens. Your doctor may suggest an alternative therapy for you.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
Women who are pregnant must try to quit smoking without using a nicotine replacement therapy. However, if it is not possible, NICOTEX can be used in them to quit smoking after consulting their doctor.
BREASTFEEDING
Women who are breastfeeding must try to quit smoking without using a nicotine replacement therapy. However, if it is not possible, NICOTEX can be used in them to quit smoking after consulting their doctor. Make sure to breastfeed the infant before taking NICOTEX so that the infant receives only a lesser amount of the medicine through breast milk.
KIDNEY
NICOTEX should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
LIVER
NICOTEX should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
ALLERGY
Do not take NICOTEX if you are allergic to Nicotine.
HEART DISEASE
NICOTEX should be used with caution in patients with heart diseases (such as abnormal heartbeat, angina, high blood pressure or stroke). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
OTHERS
Before taking NICOTEX, inform your physician if you:
- Have diabetes
- Have ulcers in the esophagus, stomach or in the intestines
- Have an overactive thyroid disorder
- Have phaeochromocytoma (a tumor present in adrenal gland)
- Have fits or seizures
Use in pediatrics:
NICOTEX is not recommended for use in children aged below 12 years. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
NICOTEX should be used with caution in elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug Interaction:
Before taking NICOTEX, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- Theophylline (a medicine used to treat asthma)
- Clozapine (a medicine used to treat schizophrenia)
- Ropinirole (a medicine used to treat Parkinson’s disease)
- Insulin (used to treat diabetes)
B. Drug-Food Interaction:
Avoid drinking coffee, soda and other acidic beverages while taking NICOTEX as it may increase the risk of side effects.
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally took more NICOTEX, contact your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdosage might include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, weakness, increased saliva secretion, rapid heartbeat, stomach pain, diarrhea, sweating, or hearing disturbance.
