INTRODUCTION
ZONIMID 100MG contains Zonisamide which belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants, which is used to treat partial seizures. It suppresses the abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal and cause seizures. Partial seizure is a seizure which affects only one part of the brain.
Zonisamide exerts anticonvulsant effects by blocking specific pores on the surface of nerve cells called sodium and calcium channels which are responsible for transmission of electrical impulses between nerve cells. By blocking these channels, zonisamide prevents the nerve cells from synchronizing their activity and prevents abnormal electrical activity spreading through the brain, thus reducing the chances of epilepsy.
Take ZONIMID 100MG according to the dose and frequency as advised by your doctor. Swallow as a whole, do not crush or chew. It is not recommended for children below the age of 6 years. Drink sufficient amount of water, which reduces the risk of kidney stones, overheating and keeps cool. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have kidney, liver problems, depression or suicidal thoughts and if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant. It is not recommended during breastfeeding. The common side effects are dizziness, loss of appetite, headache, nausea, agitation and irritability.
