INTRODUCTION
QUTAN SR 50MG contains quetiapine which belongs to a group of medicine called antipsychotics. It is used to treat several illnesses such as Bipolar depression, Mania, and Schizophrenia. Bipolar depression is a mental disorder characterized with episodes of mood swings ranging from depression to mania. Mania makes the person feel more excited, agitated and overactive or more aggressive.
Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to think, feel and behave clearly resulting in a condition where the person can hear or feel things that does not exist, believe in things which are not true or may feel unusually anxious, confused, or depressed. It works by rebalancing dopamine and serotonin which improves thinking, mood and behaviour.
Using of this medicine during the third trimester of pregnancy is not recommended since it may result in abnormal muscle movements and/or withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, feeding disorder, respiratory distress and tremor in new-borns after delivery. QUTAN SR 50MG is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Always take QUTAN SR 50MG exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken with or without food and try to take at the same time each day. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Do not drink grapefruit juice while you are taking this medicine.

COMMON
Dizziness, headache, dry mouth
Feeling sleepy
Abnormal muscle movements
Changes in the amount of certain fats
Weight gain
Irregular heart beat
Shortness of breath
Low blood pressure
Constipation, indigestion

RARE
Jaundice, hepatitis
Priapism
Blood clots in the veins especially in the legs
Inflammation of the pancreas
Swelling of breasts and unexpected production of breast milk (galactorrhoea)
Menstrual disorder
Metabolic syndrome (includes increase in fat around your abdomen, high blood pressure and increase in your blood sugar)
Walking, talking, eating while you are asleep
Decreased body temperature (hypothermia)
Bowel obstruction
Increased blood creatine phosphokinase (a substance from the muscles)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness:
Get up and move around to feel awake, take small naps to edge off the sleepiness. Give your eyes a break to avoid fatigue and eat a healthy food to boost energy.
Headache:
Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.
Constipation:
Take fibre rich foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals, and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.
Vomiting:
Try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.

PREGNANCY
QUTAN SR 50MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
BREASTFEEDING
QUTAN SR 50MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machine while taking this medicine since it may cause sleepiness.
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with QUTAN SR 50MG.
KIDNEY
QUTAN SR 50MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
QUTAN SR 50MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not take QUTAN SR 50MG if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to quetiapine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
HEART DISEASE
QUTAN SR 50MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from active heart diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
OTHERS
Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,
Low blood pressure
Had a stroke, especially if you are elderly
Fit (seizure)
Diabetes or have a risk of getting diabetes
Low levels of white blood cells in the past
Are an elderly person with dementia (loss of brain function)
Family history of blood clots
A condition where you stop breathing for short periods during your normal nightly sleep (called sleep apnoea)
Urinary retention
An enlarged prostate, a blockage in your intestines, or increased pressure inside your eye
INTERACTIONS
Talk to your doctor if you are taking,
Medicines used for HIV infection
Azole medicines (used to treat fungal infections)
Erythromycin or clarithromycin (used to treat infections)
Nefazodone (used to treat depression)
Phenytoin or carbamazepine (used to treat epilepsy)
Medicines used to treat high blood pressure
Barbiturates (used to treat difficulty sleeping)
Anti-psychotic medicine such as thioridazine or lithium (used to treat mental problems)
Diuretics (water pills)
