Provanol SR-40 Tablet is a beta-blocker medicine that is used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain radiating to arms, neck and back), and hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (an abnormal thickening of heart muscle). It is also used to prevent migraine headaches. In some cases, it is also used alone or in combination with other medications to treat heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia). This medicine attaches to the heart and blocks certain molecules that trigger receptors. These receptors are responsible for inducing heartbeat, thus blocking it makes the heartbeat slow and lowers blood pressure. Your doctor may prescribe you a dose based on the clinical response to the medicine.
The common side effects of Provanol SR-40 Tablet are tiredness, unusual weakness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Most of these side effects are short term and may improve as the body gets habituated to them. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor at the earliest. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to it.
You can take Provanol SR-40 Tablet with or without food. Take this medicine as directed by your doctor and do not stop on your own even you feel better. What is it prescribed for?
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition in which the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels is high. Provanol SR-40 Tablet is used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents for the treatment of high blood pressure which may be caused by genetic or environmental factors.
Angina pectoris is a heart condition characterized by pain in the chest radiating to the arms, neck and back. Provanol SR-40 Tablet is used to decrease the frequency of occurrence of chest pain and also increase exercise tolerance.
Migraine is a brain condition characterized by throbbing headache with or without visual alteration (experiencing flashing of light). Provanol SR-40 Tablet is used for the prevention of migraine headaches. However, the efficacy of this medicine in relieving migraine headaches is unknown.
Hypertrophic subaortic stenosis
Hypertrophic subaortic stenosis is a heart condition in which there is an abnormal thickening of the heart muscle that reduces the blood pumping ability. Provanol SR-40 Tablet is used to improve symptoms in patients suffering from this disease.

When not to use?
Do not take Provanol SR-40 Tablet if you have a known allergy to Propranolol or any other inactive ingredients present along with the formulation. Seek medical attention if you come across any allergic reactions such as skin rash, hives, swelling (face, lips, tongue, etc.), breathing difficulty, etc.
Uncompensated congestive heart failure
Uncompensated congestive heart failure is a syndrome in which the functional and structural change in the heart leads to the inability of the heart to pump and accommodate the blood. Provanol SR-40 Tablet is not recommended for use in patients with this heart condition as it may increase the risk of complete loss of heart function, thus worsening the condition.
Cardiogenic shock is a sudden drop of blood pressure in the body. The heart loses its ability to pump enough blood to meet the demands of the body. Provanol SR-40 Tablet is not recommended for use in patients with cardiogenic shock as it may worsen the heart condition leading to other complications.
Bradycardia is a heart condition in which the heartbeat becomes very low than normal. Using Provanol SR-40 Tablet may lead to provoke low heartbeat and may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Heart block greater than first degree
A heart block is a condition in which the electrical signals do not pass or blocks in the heart which slows or stops the blood pumping phenomena of the heart. Warnings for special population

Provanol SR-40 Tablet is known to pass into breastmilk. It may alter the heart function in infants. Your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding or therapy based on the clinical condition. Discuss all the benefits and risks before taking this medicine.
Taking Provanol SR-40 Tablet in hyperthyroid patients may mask the symptoms of hyperthyroidism. It may also alter the thyroid function test. If undiagnosed and untreated, this condition may lead to a thyroid storm (a life-threatening condition in which there is an excess release of thyroid hormone (TSH) leading to toxicity in the body). Close monitoring of thyroid function tests and clinical conditions is indicated.
It is advised to not indulge in certain sports while consuming Provanol SR-40 Tablet. Archery, racing, shooting, and other high-risk sports should be avoided. Sportspersons should refer to the list of banned medicines published by the World Anti-Doping Agency while participating in specific sports events.
Driving or operating machinery
Provanol SR-40 Tablet may cause fatigue, weakness, or dizziness in some patients. It is advised that you do not perform any activities such as driving a vehicle or operating machinery if you experience any of these symptoms.
Take the missed dose of Provanol SR-40 Tablet as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume at the scheduled time. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.
Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case you suspect Provanol SR-40 Tablet overdose.

Interaction with Alcohol

Interaction with Medicine
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines
Provanol SR-40 Tablet is not recommended for use in patients with a history of bronchial asthma (swelling and narrowing of airway path with overproduction of mucous) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs) as it may increase the risk of narrowing of the airway path. Close monitoring of the lungs function is indicated.
Provanol SR-40 Tablet may mask the monitory signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) such as blood pressure, pulse rate, etc., especially in patients taking insulin. Close monitoring of blood sugar levels is indicated in these patients.
Provanol SR-40 Tablet when used in glaucoma may increase the risk of decreased eye pressure. It will lead to a worsening of glaucoma and may also lead to open-angle glaucoma. hence, it is not recommended to use in this condition.
Provanol SR-40 Tablet should be used with caution in patients suffering from mild to moderate liver diseases due to the increased risk of liver cirrhosis (scarring of the healthy liver tissue leading to irreversible liver damage). Close monitoring of liver function is indicated.
Caution should be exercised while taking Provanol SR-40 Tablet in kidney disease patients as it may increase the risk of Provanol SR-40 Tablet accumulation in the kidneys as this medicine is excreted through kidneys. Close monitoring of kidney function is necessary while receiving this medicine.
Taking Provanol SR-40 Tablet with multivitamins should be avoided since it may decrease the effects of the medicine. A time gap of at least 2 hours should be maintained between the administration of multivitamins with minerals and this medicine to avoid their interaction.
