INTRODUCTION
MARZON DUO contains Sultamicillin which belongs to a group of medicines called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It is indicated to treat upper respiratory tract infections including sinusitis, otitis media and tonsillitis, lower respiratory tract infections including bacterial pneumonias and bronchitis, urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis, skin and soft tissue infections and gonococcal infections. It may also be indicated in patients requiring sulbactam/ampicillin therapy following initial treatment with sulbactam/ampicillin IM/IV.
Sultamicillin is a codrug of ampicillin and sulbactam. After oral administration, it is absorbed and hydrolytically cleaved to ampicillin and sulbactam by enzymes in the gut wall. It is a semi-synthetic orally active broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic, exerts antibacterial activity against sensitive organisms by inhibiting biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide. Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor, irreversibly inhibits many beta-lactamases which occur in resistant bacteria strains.
