INTRODUCTION
ETROBAX 90MG contains Etoricoxib which belongs to the group of medicines called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. ETROBAX 90MG is used in people above 16 years of age in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and gout to reduce pain and swelling (inflammation) in the joints and muscles. It is also used as a short-term treatment after dental surgery to relieve moderate pain.
Osteoarthritis is a disease of joints that occurs due to gradual breakdown of cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones. It is generally characterized by symptoms such as swelling, pain and tenderness. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease of the joints.
Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis that occurs as severe pain, redness and tenderness in joints. Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory disease of the spine and large joints, generally, characterized by symptoms such as pain and stiffness in the lower back and hips.
Etoricoxib works by inhibiting the naturally occurring chemical (Cox-2) in the body which prevents the production of a chemical (prostaglandins) thereby helping in reducing swelling and providing relief from pain.
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended for use in patients having stomach ulcer or intestinal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease, high blood pressure, stoke, heart failure, angina (chest pain), heart attack, bypass surgery, serious liver and kidney diseases.
Before taking ETROBAX 90MG, inform your doctor if you are a smoker, and or have diabetes, high cholesterol, swelling due to fluid retention, or been treated for an infection. ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended for use during pregnancy and in breastfeeding women. It is also not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 16 years of age). Consult your doctor before taking the medicine. The most common side effects of taking ETROBAX 90MG are swelling of legs and feet due to fluid retention (oedema), dizziness, headache, irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, constipation, and nausea. Contact your doctor if any of the symptoms worsen.
USES OF ETROBAX 90MG
It is used:
- To reduce pain and swelling (inflammation) in the joints and muscles in people above 16 years of age with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and gout
- As a short-term treatment after dental surgery to relieve moderate pain
HOW ETROBAX 90MG WORKS
ETROBAX 90MG works by inhibiting the naturally occurring chemical (Cox-2) in the body which prevents the production of a chemical (prostaglandins) thereby helping in reducing swelling and providing relief from pain.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take ETROBAX 90MG as advised by your physician. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF ETROBAX 90MG
COMMON
- Signs of dry socket such as inflammation and pain after a tooth extraction
- Signs of oedema such as swelling of legs and feet due to fluid retention
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Abnormal or irregular heartbeat
- Increased blood pressure
- Signs of bronchospasm such as wheezing or shortness of breath
- Constipation
- Wind (excessive gas)
- Gastritis (inflammation of lining of stomach),
- Heartburn
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach pain
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Mouth ulcers
- Bruising
- Weakness and fatigue
- Flu like illness
UNCOMMON
- Gastroenteritis (inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract)
- Signs of hypersensitivity reaction such as red, itchy skin
- Taste alteration
- Eye irritation and redness
- Ringing in the ears
- Stomach or bowel bloating
- Dry mouth
- Stomach ulcer
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Muscle cramp/spasm
RARE
- Signs of angioedema with allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat which may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing
- Confusion
- Restlessness
- Signs of liver problems (hepatitis) such as fever, fatigue, loss of appetite
Stop taking ETROBAX 90MG and contact your doctor immediately if you have:
- Following symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pains, or ankle swelling
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) – signs of liver problems
- Severe stomach pain or your stools become black
- Signs of allergic reactions such as ulcers or blistering, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat which may cause difficulty in breathing

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness: If you feel dizzy, keep your eyes closed, rest and relax. Do not drive or operate machinery. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Headache: Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if required. Do not consume alcohol. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Nausea / Vomiting: Take this medicine with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Fatigue: Get enough sleep and exercise on regular basis. Take part in relaxing activities (like yoga) and drink enough fluids to stay hydrated.
Diarrhea: Do not take any medicine on your own for treating constipation. Eat more fiber especially soluble fiber foods like beans, oats, oat bran, rice bran, barley, citrus fruits, apples, strawberries, etc. Keep yourself hydrated. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended for use in pregnancy or if planning to be pregnant. Consult your doctor before taking.
BREASTFEEDING
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended for use in breast-feeding women or if planning to breast-feed, since it may be excreted in breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizzy or sleepy after taking ETROBAX 90MG.
KIDNEY
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended in patients with serious kidney disease. ETROBAX 90MG should be used with caution in patients with history of kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking.
LIVER
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended in patients with serious liver disease. ETROBAX 90MG should be used with caution in patients with history of liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking.
ALLERGY
Do not take ETROBAX 90MG if you are allergic to etoricoxib, other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and COX-2 inhibitors or any other ingredients of this medicine. Consult your doctor before taking.
HEART DISEASE
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended in patients with heart problems including heart failure (moderate or severe types), angina (chest pain), heart attack, bypass surgery, peripheral arterial disease (poor circulation in legs or feet due to narrow or blocked arteries). ETROBAX 90MG should be used with caution in patients with history of heart failure, or any other form of heart disease. Consult your doctor before taking.
OTHERS
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended for use if you have:
- Current stomach ulcer or bleeding in your stomach or intestines
- Inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- High blood pressure
- A history of stroke (including mini-stroke, transient ischemic attack)
Before taking ETROBAX 90MG, inform your doctor if you
- Are dehydrated, due to prolonged vomiting or diarrhea
- Have swelling due to fluid retention
- Are being treated for an infection
- Have diabetes
- Have high cholesterol
- Are a smoker
Use in Pediatrics:
ETROBAX 90MG is not recommended in children and adolescents under 16 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking.
Use in Geriatrics:
ETROBAX 90MG should be used with caution in elderly patients aged above 65 years. Consult your doctor before taking.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug – Drug interactions:
Before taking ETROBAX 90MG, inform your doctor if you are taking,
- Warfarin (used to treat blood clots)
- Rifampicin (used to treat bacterial infections such as tuberculosis)
- Methotrexate (a medicine used for suppressing the immune system, and often used in rheumatoid arthritis)
- Ciclosporin or tacrolimus (medicines used for suppressing the immune system)
- Lithium (used to treat depression)
- Medicines used to help control high blood pressure and heart failure such as ACE inhibitors (Ex. enalapril, ramipril), and angiotensin receptor blockers (Ex. losartan, valsartan)
- Diuretics (used to treat high blood pressure) Ex. bumetanide, ethacrynic acid
- Digoxin (used to treat heart failure and irregular heart rhythm)
- Minoxidil (used to treat high blood pressure)
- Salbutamol (used to treat asthma)
- Birth control pills (used to prevent pregnancy)
- Hormone replacement therapy (used to treat common menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and vaginal discomfort). Ex. Conjugated estrogen
- Acetylsalicylic acid/aspirin (used to reduce fever and relieve pain)
Over dosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally consume excess of ETROBAX 90MG, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.
