INTRODUCTION
CIFRAN 500MG contains Ciprofloxacin which belongs to a group of medicines called fluoroquinolones. It is used to treat infections of the skin, sinuses, bone, lung, ear, abdomen, kidney, prostate, and bladder (bacterial infections). It may also used in the management of patients with low white blood cell counts (neutropenia) who have a fever that is suspected to be due to a bacterial infection. Take the medicine according to the dose and duration as advised by your doctor.
Ciprofloxacin is a broad spectrum antibiotic which inhibits DNA gyrase and the synthesis of bacterial DNA and acts as bactericidal, notably against gram-negative bacteria.
Always take CIFRAN 500MG exactly as directed by your doctor. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have or had any kidney, liver or heart impairment, allergies, epilepsy or joint problems. Tell your doctor if you are taking any medications. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers consult your doctor before taking the medicine. It is not suitable for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age. It may also be used to treat other specific severe infections in children and adolescents if your doctor considers it necessary. The common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and skin rash. Do not eat or drink any dairy products (such as milk or yoghurt) or drinks with added calcium as well as food containing caffeine.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Always take CIFRAN 500MG exactly as your doctor has told you. Swallow as a whole with plenty of water and do not crush or chew.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CIFRAN 500MG
SERIOUS
- Serious allergic reactions Hives
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, face
- Throat tightness or hoarseness
- Rapid, irregular heartbeat or feeling fainting
- Yellowing of your skin or white part of your eyes and dark urine (liver problem)
- Sudden chest, stomach, or back pain
- Watery diarrhea with bloody stools
COMMON

RARE
- Seizures
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Dizziness:
Get up and move around to feel awake, take naps and give your eyes a break to avoid fatigue and eat a healthy food to boost energy.
Nausea or vomiting:
Stick to normal routine meals and avoid spicy foods.
Abdominal pain:
Place a warm water bottle on abdomen or soak in a warm bath. Drink plenty of water.
Diarrhoea:
Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. ORS also can be used to prevent dehydration.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
It is preferable to avoid the use of CIFRAN 500MG during pregnancy. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and any potential risks before giving it to you. Consult your doctor for advice.
BREASTFEEDING
CIFRAN 500MG is not recommended during breast-feeding as it may excrete in breast milk and harm your baby. Consult your doctor for advice.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Due to its neurological effects, CIFRAN 500MG may affect reaction time. Thus, the ability to drive or handle any heavy machines may be impaired.
KIDNEY
CIFRAN 500MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney diseases, if needed dose will be adjusted accordingly. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
There are limited data available on CIFRAN 500MG and should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Tell your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Ciprofloxacin.
HEART DISEASE
CIFRAN 500MG should be used with caution in patients who recently had a heart attack, had heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias) and heart failure. Consult your doctor for advice.
OTHERS
Inform your doctor before taking this medicine, if you have or had,
- Epilepsy or other neurological conditions
- History of tendon problems
- Diabetes
- Myasthenia gravis
- Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)
- Enlargement or bulge of a large blood vessel
- Aortic dissection (tear in the aorta wall)
INTERACTIONS
Tell your doctor if you are taking,
- Tizanidine (used for muscle spasticity)
- Cyclosporine (used in organ transplantation)
- Methotrexate (treats certain types of cancer, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis)
- Multivitamins that contain iron
- Omeprazole, antacids (treats stomach problem)
- Sucralfate
- Warfarin, acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon or fluindione (used to thin the blood)
- Theophylline (treats breathing problems)
- Phenytoin (used for epilepsy)
- Probenecid (treats gout)
- Ropinirole (treats Parkinson’s disease)
- Olanzapine, clozapine (treats psychotic disorders)
- Metoclopramide (for nausea and vomiting)
- Quinidine, hydroquinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, ibutilide (treats heart problems)
- Tricyclic antidepressants, some antimicrobials
- Zolpidem (for sleep disorders)
- Pentoxifylline (used for circulatory disorders)
- Caffeine
- Duloxetine (used for depression, diabetic nerve damage or incontinence)
- Lidocaine (treats heart conditions or anaesthetic use)
- Sildenafil (used for erectile dysfunction)
- Agomelatine (for depression)
